Crush Strength
Mechanical Behavior of Gaskets
Crush strength is related to gasket thickness, operating (test) temperature, and the inherent properties of the material itself. In the previous issue, we discussed the impact of operating (test) temperature, so today we will focus on the inherent properties of the material.
3.Inherent Properties of the Material
If thickness and temperature are the "external factors" affecting crush strength, then the material of the gasket is the "core internal factor" that determines it.
Gaskets made of different materials exhibit significant differences in crush strength due to variations in their molecular structures and mechanical properties. Ranging from pure rubber gaskets used under low pressure and normal temperature to metal gaskets suitable for high pressure and high temperature, the choice of material directly determines the "compression resistance capability" of the gasket.

Let's start with the most common "elastomer gaskets". These gaskets are mainly made of pure rubber (such as nitrile rubber and fluororubber). Their advantages include good elasticity and strong sealing performance, enabling them to fit well with irregular flange surfaces. However, they have a drawback of low strength, with a crush strength typically ranging from 10 MPa to 50 MPa.

Finally, there are "metal gaskets", which are mainly made of metal materials and are excellent in terms of "compression resistance". The yield strength and tensile strength of metal materials are much higher than those of non-metallic materials.
In addition to the material itself, the processing technology also affects the crush strength. When selecting a gasket, it is necessary not only to choose the right material but also to pay attention to the processing technology, so as to give full play to the "compression resistance capability" of the gasket.
