Crushing Strength
Gasket Mechanical Behavior Performance
Crushing strength is related to gasket thickness, operating (or test) temperature, and the inherent properties of the material itself. We have discussed these influencing factors in the previous episodes, and today we will give you a brief summary.

Crushing Strength - Summary
In practical engineering applications, gasket crushing is one of the causes of seal failure. During the initial installation phase of the equipment, it is necessary to overcome the axial thrust generated by the medium pressure. Therefore, this part of the load acts on the sealing gasket during the installation phase, and at this time, the gasket may be in an overloaded state or even crushed.

GB150-2011 "Pressure Vessels" Clause 7.5.1.5 specifically states: "The gasket is subjected to the maximum bolt load in the pre-tightened state, and will lose its sealing performance if over-compressed. The gasket shall have a sufficient width, whose value can be determined based on experience."

The greater the width, the larger the force-bearing area, the smaller the stress under the same load, and the less likely crushing will occur.
Of course, there are other good methods to solve this problem.
Therefore, reasonably determining the stress range of the gasket to ensure that it is not crushed is an important condition for ensuring effective sealing.
