In actual working conditions, when load is applied to bolts, the gasket will experience thickness reduction due to compressive stress, which is a normal phenomenon in the initial stage.
However, as the equipment operates for a longer time, you will find that the gasket thickness continues to decrease, and the stress borne by the gasket also reduces accordingly. This phenomenon is known as stress relaxation.

It should be noted that the stress relaxation of gaskets is not caused by a single factor, but by the combined effect of two major factors: stress relaxation and creep.

According to the standard definition, pure relaxation refers to the change in gasket stress under constant strain, which is usually expressed as the percentage of gasket stress change under the initial load. This indicator is also an important reference for judging the stability of gaskets subsequently.
